Dixie

Dixie came to Weeping Willows Ranch when she was only six months old. She was a wild baby mustang who had never learned that people could be trusted. Everything was unfamiliar and frightening, and she wanted nothing to do with being touched or handled.

We knew earning Dixie’s trust would take patience, kindness and countless hours of gentle work. Instead of rushing her, we allowed her to learn at her own pace. Each small step was celebrated, from accepting our presence and taking food from our hands to wearing a halter, having her hooves trimmed and learning new skills.

Over time, she has discovered that we could bring comfort instead of fear and that she finally had a safe place to call home. Today, Dixie is a loving, curious and spirited horse with a personality as big as the Arizona sky. She still has a little wild mustang attitude—and we would not want her any other way—but she has become affectionate, trusting and eager to learn.

Dixie’s journey is exactly what Weeping Willows Ranch is all about: giving animals the time, safety and second chance they need to become who they were always meant to be. Dixie is no longer the frightened wild baby who arrived at our ranch. She is loved, she is safe and she is home forever.
